Utah leads in commercial real estate construction

By Hunter Schwarz

May 5th, 2012 @ 2:41pm

SALT LAKE CITY ? For the first time since the recession began, development and construction of commercial real estate is on the rebound nationally, and Utah is among the leading states.

Utah ranked sixth in the U.S. in 2011 for direct spending across all categories of commercial real estate, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association reported Tuesday. That's a leap from Utah's 2010 placing ? No. 26. Only West Virginia saw a bigger jump, from No. 48 to No. 3.

According to the study, $3.6 billion was spent in the development and construction of office, industrial and retail buildings statewide in 2011, which supported 77,550 jobs.

"It's not just one thing, it's a bunch of things," said Craig Thomas, senior vice president for CBRE, a commercial real estate firm. "We have been able to come out of this economic downturn faster."

Thomas said a lot of businesses have migrated from California "because they can't afford to do business there." Thomas cited multimillion-dollar facilities built by companies like eBay, EMCCorp and Adobe that have chosen to come to the state as evidence. The young, educated workforce is another draw for companies to relocate to Utah, Thomas said.

The City Creek development, a $1.5 billion mixed-use project in downtown Salt Lake City that opened in March, also played a major role in commercial growth last year.

Developers in Utah are prudent, Thomas said, and the state is not facing the same problems other states are. "A lot of cities ? built way too many office buildings," he said. "The developers (in Utah) are a lot like the state. We pay our bills as we go."

Thomas predicted the commercial real estate market in the state will continue to be strong.

"The next 10 years in Utah will be its best ever," he said.

Texas led the survey with $7.9 billion in spending followed by New York, West Virginia, California and Arizona.

Stephen S. Fuller, professor and director of the Center for Regional Analysis at the George Mason University, who authored the study, said 2011 was a "transition year" for the U.S. economy and the construction sector.

"The U.S. economy shifted from a federal stimulus to private-sector driven growth pattern and construction spending grew accordingly," Fuller said.

PARIS (AP) ? France handed the presidency Sunday to leftist Francois Hollande, a champion of government stimulus programs who says the state should protect the downtrodden ? a victory that could deal a death blow to the drive for austerity that has been the hallmark of Europe in recent years.

Mild and affable, the president-elect inherits a country deep in debt and divided over how to integrate immigrants while preserving its national identity. Markets will closely watch his initial moves as president.

He narrowly defeated the hard-driving, attention-getting Nicolas Sarkozy, an America-friendly leader who led the country through its worst economic troubles since World War II but whose policies and personality proved too bitter for many voters to swallow.

"Austerity can no longer be inevitable!" Hollande declared in his victory speech after a surprising campaign that saw him transform from an unremarkable figure to an increasingly statesmanlike one. He will take office no later than May 16.

Speaking to exuberant crowds, Hollande portrayed himself as a vehicle for change across Europe.

"In all the capitals ... there are people who, thanks to us, are hoping, are looking to us, and want to finish with austerity," he told supporters early Monday at Paris' Place de la Bastille. "You are a movement lifting up everywhere in Europe, and perhaps the world."

Celebrations continued into the night on the iconic plaza of the French Revolution, with revelers waving French, European and labor union flags and climbing the base of its central column. Leftists were overjoyed to have one of their own in power for the first time since Socialist Francois Mitterrand was president from 1981 to 1995.

Sarkozy is the latest victim of a wave of voter anger over spending cuts in Europe that has ousted governments and leaders in the past couple of years.

In Greece, a parliamentary vote Sunday was seen as critical to the country's prospects for pulling out of a deep financial crisis felt in world markets. A state election in Germany and local elections in Italy were seen as tests of support for the national governments' policies.

In France, with 95 percent of the vote counted, official results showed Hollande with 51.6 percent of the vote compared with Sarkozy's 48.4 percent, the Interior Ministry said. The turnout was a strong 81 percent.

"Too many divisions, too many wounds, too many breakdowns and divides have separated our fellow citizens. This is over now," Hollande said in his victory speech, alluding to the divisive Sarkozy presidency. "The foremost duty of the president of the Republic is to unite ... in order to face the challenges that await us."

Those challenges are legion, and begin with Europe's debt crisis.

Hollande has said his first act after the election will be to write a letter to other European leaders calling for a renegotiation of a budget-trimming treaty aimed at bringing the continent's economies closer together. Hollande wants to allow for government-funded stimulus programs in hopes of restarting growth, arguing that debts will only get worse if Europe's economies don't start growing again.

Sarkozy and Germany's Angela Merkel spearheaded the cost-cutting treaty, and many have worried about potential conflict within the Franco-German "couple" that underpins Europe's post-war unity.

Merkel called Hollande to congratulate him on his victory. Hollande has said his first trip would be to Berlin.

President Barack Obama also offered congratulations and an invitation to the White House ahead of this month's summit of the Group of Eight leading economies at Camp David, Md., the White House said. After that, Hollande will attend a NATO summit in Chicago, where he will announce he is pulling French troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year.

While some market players have worried about a Hollande presidency, Jeffrey Bergstrand, professor of finance at the University of Notre Dame, said it's a good thing that Hollande will push for more spending throughout Europe to stimulate the economy.

Europe is "going into a really serious and poor situation," Bergstrand said. Hollande "is going to become the speaker for those countries that want to do something about economic growth."

Sarkozy conceded defeat minutes after the polls closed, saying he had called Hollande to wish him "good luck" as the country's new leader.

"I bear responsibility. ... for the defeat," he said. "I committed myself totally, fully, but I didn't succeed in convincing a majority of the French. ... I didn't succeed in making the values we share win."

Sarkozy came to office on a wave of hope for change that critics say he squandered even before the economic crises hit. They saw his tax reforms as too friendly to the rich, his divorce in office and courtship of supermodel Carla Bruni as unseemly, and his sharp tongue as unfitting for his esteemed role.

French politicians now turn their attention to parliamentary elections next month. With what appears to be a thin victory margin, Hollande must more than ever count on a healthy majority in June legislative elections ? the next challenge for Sarkozy's conservatives.

"The hour is one of mobilization. ... We must not give all the power to the left," said Jean-Francois Cope, leader of Sarkozy's UMP party.

The Socialists will have blanket control of the country if they get a majority in the decisive lower house of parliament. They already preside over the Senate and hold most regions and municipalities in France.

Hollande has pledged to tax the very rich at 75 percent of their income, an idea that proved wildly popular among the majority of people who don't make nearly that much. But the measure would bring in only a relatively small amount to the budget, and tax lawyers say France's taxes have always been high and unpredictable and that this may not be as much of a shock as it sounds.

Hollande wants to modify one of Sarkozy's key reforms, over the retirement age, to allow some people to retire at 60 instead of 62. He wants to hire more teachers and increase spending in a range of sectors, and ease France off its dependence on nuclear energy. He also favors legalizing euthanasia and gay marriage.

Sarkozy supporters call those proposals misguided.

"We're going to call France the new Greece," said Laetitia Barone, 19. "Hollande is now very dangerous."

Sarkozy had said he would quit politics if he lost, but was vague about his plans Sunday night.

"You can count on me to defend these ideas, convictions," he said, "but my place cannot be the same."

Sarkozy alienated many voters with a lunge to the right during the last two weeks of campaigning as he tried to lure backers of the far-right anti-EU and anti-immigration candidate Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Front party.

People of all ages and ethnicities celebrated Hollande's victory at the Bastille. Ghylaine Lambrecht, 60, who celebrated the 1981 victory of Mitterrand, was among them.

"I'm so happy. We had to put up with Sarko for 10 years," she said, referring to Sarkozy's time as interior and finance minister and five years as president. "In the last few years, the rich have been getting richer. Now long live France, an open, democratic France."

"It's magic!" proclaimed Violaine Chenais, 19. "I think Francois Hollande is not perfect, but it's clear France thinks it's time to give the left a chance. This means real hope for France. We're going to celebrate with drink and hopefully some dancing."

PFT: Luck pleased with improvement at camp

Team personnel pull clumps of grass from Vick's facemask during their NFL football game against the Washington Redskins in Landover, MarylandReuters

The death of linebacker Junior Seau has triggered a flurry of comments and articles regarding the future of football.? Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner has said that he would prefer that his sons not play football (before later that same day saying he would ?love? for them to play).? ESPN, a network that pays billions of dollars for the right to televise football games, is showcasing on the NFL home page of its website a column that makes the case for not letting our sons play football.? One of the men who currently plays the game, Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, believes football will be extinct in 20 to 30 years.

But here?s the point everyone who is pointing to the Seau suicide as a key crossroads for football is badly missing:? The NFL already has arrived at the crossroads, and the NFL has embarked on the path of safety.

Against the wishes of most players and fans.

It happened in 2009 ? nearly a year after Ashley Fox of ESPN.com made her own personal decision to not let her then-unborn son play football ? when Congress grilled Commissioner Roger Goodell and others regarding head injuries.? That relatively minor investment of political resources served as the proverbial shot across the bow, compelling the NFL to make a flurry of changes aimed at reducing the number of concussions that occur during games, diagnosing more effectively the players who have sustained concussions, and ensuring that players who have suffered concussions are not allowed back onto the field until their concussions have fully healed.

Does more need to be done?? Absolutely, and I?ve been at the front of the line (to the chagrin of more than a few readers) arguing for further changes, especially as it relates to the development of safeguards and redundancies strong enough to override the all-powerful head coach when a player like Mike Vick has ?dirt on his face? or when Colt McCoy clearly had been (as ESPN used to famously call it) ?jacked up.?

But the challenge isn?t simply to get coaches, who are driven to win and are driven crazy when rules regarding concussions keep their best players out of action, to accept the new realities of football.? Players and, ultimately, the fans must buy in, too.

As one PFT commenter recently pointed out, current players are complaining about efforts to take hard hits out of the game at a time when former players are suing the NFL for, in part, letting them hit each other too hard.? For some former players, the concussion issue becomes a convenient vehicle for venting about the fact that today?s owners and players are making obscene amounts of money, and that not enough of it is being shared with the men who made the game what it is.? Current players, however, continue to play the game without reservation or hesitation.? Indeed, 253 draft picks and hundreds more undrafted players unanimously accepted the offers of employment that have come their way in the last 10 days.

And so, at a time when so many voices are clamoring for football to change even more, the men who play the game don?t want it to.? For example, Pollard?s headline-generating prediction didn?t come from his belief that some external body will outlaw the sport, but from a concern that efforts by the NFL to make the game safer will kill it.? ?This is football,? Pollard said.? ?It?s not powder puff.? When Nike unveiled their new uniforms, I?m surprised they didn?t have flags on the side. . . .? You?re taking away the game of football.? If a quarterback throws an interception, get his butt down or run to the sidelines.? If you?re going to try to make a tackle, I?m going to look for you.? I promise you, I?m going to look for you.?

The fans have a role in this, too.? As the NFL has tried to make the game safer, the folks who devote money and/or time to watching it have complained, almost as loudly as the players.? Those same fans, who love the hits and the intensity of the sport, can?t then wring their hands and gnash their teeth when men who know that the sport entails a significant risk of getting hurt actually, you know, get hurt.

In the end, how far must the NFL go to protect players from themselves?? We remain a nation of risk-takers; in many ways, taking risks helped make our country what it is.? And we routinely take far greater risks for far less money than NFL players receive.

Hell, we even spend good money to take risks, whether it?s jumping out of airplanes or climbing rock walls or driving motorcycles, with or without helmets.? (Ashley Fox doesn?t mention in her column whether she?ll let her son engage in any of those activities.? Eventually, however, she?ll lose her vote.)

If grown men, who now can?t say they don?t know the risks of playing football, choose to play, why should anyone stop them?? And even if enough parents are actually able to steer that 14-to-18-year-old with testosterone pumping through his body away from playing football to the point where there is no high school football, the best of the best young athletes will nevertheless be recruited to learn football at the college level, at which point the wishes of mom and/or dad will go out the window ? especially if playing football pays for tuition and expenses that mom and/or dad otherwise couldn?t afford.

Though plenty of men choose to play college football because they hope to play pro football and not because they want a college education, plenty of men know that football ultimately serves its purpose by providing a college education that they otherwise wouldn?t be able to obtain.? And if, in the end, the decision comes down to the risk of incurring CTE on a gridiron or encountering an IED on a dirt road in Afghanistan, plenty of men will gladly embrace the risks of playing college football.

Non-Lung Cancers Caused Asbestos Exposure | eHealth Notes

Asbestos is a material that once was extremely popular for everything from insulation to car parts. However, it has been recognized as carcinogenic to humans. It seems as if the two cancers most often associated with asbestos are pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer. While these are definitely two of the most common disorders associated with asbestos exposure, this human carcinogen can also cause a variety of non-lung cancers as well.

As asbestos or asbestos-containing items age, the fibers can break down and become friable, or able to break off and become airborne. From here, it is easy for people in the surrounding area to inhale the particles, which is why this material is most often associated with lung diseases. However, the microscopic fibers can also settle on food, cooking utensils, and even in your drink. When you eat or drink the contaminated item, the asbestos fibers can travel through your digestive system, become lodged in anywhere from your mouth to your anus.

Unfortunately, when the particles become lodged in your body, it is actually nearly impossible for your cells to break down and digest the asbestos in order to get rid of it. Instead, nodules form over the invader, which can later turn into cancerous tumors. When these fibers travel through your digestive system, it can result in cancers including that of the throat, stomach, gallbladder, colon, and anus.

Additionally, asbestos can travel outside of your digestive system as well. Sometimes, the body may filter the fibers through the bloodstream, which then carries the carcinogenic particles to other organs. This can cause kidney and liver cancer. Because the blood carries the fibers, it can develop cancer such as leukemia. Lymphoma is also associated with asbestos exposure as the lymph system filters fluids throughout the body.

Lastly, asbestos exposure can also cause reproductive system cancers. One form of mesothelioma attacks the testicles, while medical studies have shown that asbestos exposure serves as a risk factor for ovarian and prostate cancers.

Whether you develop a lung-related or non-lung cancer due to asbestos exposure, you deserve more information regarding asbestos exposure, treatment options, and more. Please contact the Asbestos Help Center today to learn more.

A tale of 2 US employment surveys, at a glance

The U.S. economy added just 115,000 jobs in April, below March's gain of 154,000 and the fewest in six months. Yet the unemployment rate fell.

How did the rate fall despite such a small job gain? Because the government does one survey to learn how many jobs were created and another survey to determine the unemployment rate. Those surveys can produce results that sometimes seem to conflict.

One is called the payroll survey. It asks mostly large companies and government agencies how many people they employed during the month. This survey produces the number of jobs gained or lost. In April, the payroll survey showed that companies added 130,000 jobs, and federal, state and local governments cut 15,000.

The other is the household survey. Government workers ask whether the adults in a household have a job. Those who don't are asked whether they're looking for one. If they are, they're considered unemployed. If they aren't, they're not considered part of the work force and aren't counted as unemployed. The household survey produces each month's unemployment rate.

In April, the household survey showed that the number of people in the work force fell by 342,000. Most of them were unemployed and stopped looking for a job. That lowered the unemployment rate slightly, from 8.2 percent to 8.1 percent.

The percentage of those 16 and over in the work force fell to 63.6 percent, the lowest in more than 30 years.

Unlike the payroll survey, the household survey captures farm workers, the self-employed and people who work for new companies. It also does a better job capturing hiring by small businesses.

But the household survey is more volatile from month to month. The Labor Department surveys just 60,000 households, a small fraction of the more than 100 million U.S. households. The household survey showed that the number of people who say they have a job surged by 631,000 in January and 428,000 in February.

By contrast, the payroll survey seeks information from 140,000 companies and government agencies ? and they employ roughly one-third of non-farm employees. The employers send forms to the Labor Department noting how many people they employ. They also provide wages, hours and other details.

Most Americans focus more on the unemployment rate, which comes from the household survey. But economists generally prefer the jobs figure from the payroll survey.

Economists note that the surveys tend to even out over time. In the past year, the payroll surveys have shown that employers added roughly 1.8 million jobs. The household surveys have shown that close to 2.2 million more people said they found work.

Protein tweak may trigger Alzheimer?s

Unusual version of disease-linked amyloid-beta sows destruction in mouse brains

Web edition : Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Scientists have caught tiny amounts of a strangely shaped protein ? a relative of a well-known suspect in Alzheimer?s disease ? spreading destruction throughout the brains of mice. If a similar process happens in the human brain, it could help explain how Alzheimer?s starts, and even suggest new ways to stop the dangerous molecule?s spread.

Many Alzheimer?s researchers believe the abundance of a molecule called A-beta in the brain is one of the key steps in developing the disease. A-beta commonly takes the form of a chain of 42 protein building blocks called amino acids.

The new study chronicles the dangers of a modified A-beta that lacks the first two amino acids in the chain. Capping this stub is a rare, circular amino acid called pyroglutamate. Until recently, this form ?has been largely ignored as some minor mysterious form of amyloid-beta,? says study coauthor George Bloom of the University of Virginia. Yet even trace amounts of this version, called pyroglutamylated A-beta, or pE A-beta, are devastating to mouse nerve cells, he and colleagues report online May 2 in Nature.

?This opens up a whole new view of the disease,? says neurogeneticist Rudy Tanzi of Harvard Medical School. Instead of focusing just on the amount of A-beta in the brain, scientists need to pay attention to modifications of the molecule, too, he says.

Minuscule amounts of pE A-beta can pair up with more commonplace types and trigger them to misfold, the team reports. These misfolded molecules are then much more deadly to nerve cells, killing about half of mice nerve cells tested in a dish within 24 hours. Experiments with pE A-beta in the brains of mice revealed signs of massive damage, too. ?Even at vanishingly small quantities, the mixture is still toxic,? Bloom says.

But this toxicity required a co-conspirator ? a protein called tau that tangles up inside nerve cells. Mice genetically designed to lack tau were largely immune to the ill effects of pE A-beta, the team reports. Scientists don?t yet understand exactly how tau and A-beta interact.

It?s not clear whether the results in mice will apply to people. Bloom and his colleagues detected pE A-beta in three out of three postmortem brains of people diagnosed with Alzheimer?s, and one out of three from people without the disease.

The study may have uncovered one of the first steps in a long disease process, says Tanzi. ?This puts even more emphasis on early detection of the disease before symptoms appear,? he says. ?We really need to hit this disease early.?

The research also points out one potential new way to do that. A Germany-based company called Probiodrug, where three coauthors of the study work, is developing a medicine designed to curb pE A-beta?s production in the brain by targeting the molecule?s creator ? an enzyme called glutaminyl cyclase. In 2011, the company announced positive results from preliminary safety tests of the drug in healthy volunteers.

Flying 3-D eye-bots

ScienceDaily (May 3, 2012) ? They can be deployed as additional surveillance resources during major events, or as high-resolution 3D street imaging systems. Intelligent swarms of aerial drones are a universally useful tool for police, crisis managers and urban planners. Special 3D sensors developed by Fraunhofer researchers ensure flawless aerobatics and prevent collisions.

Like a well-rehearsed formation team, a flock of flying robots rises slowly into the air with a loud buzzing noise. A good two dozen in number, they perform an intricate dance in the sky above the seething hordes of soccer fans. Rowdy hooligans have stormed the field and set off flares. Fights are breaking out all over, smoke is hindering visibility, and chaos is the order of the day. Only the swarm of flying drones can maintain an overview of the situation. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a kind of mini-helicopter, with a wingspan of around two meters. They have a propeller on each of their two variable-geometry side wings, which lends them rapid and precise maneuverability. In operation over the playing field, their cameras and sensors capture urgently-needed images and data, and transmit them to the control center. Where are the most seriously injured people? What's the best way to separate the rival gangs? The information provided by the drones allows the head of operations to make important decisions more quickly, while the robots form up to go about their business above the arena autonomously -- and without ever colliding with each other, or with any other obstacles.

A CMOS sensor developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS in Duisburg lies at the heart of the anti-collision technology. "The sensor can measure three-dimensional distances very efficiently," says Werner Brockherde, head of the development department. Just as in a black and white camera, every pixel on the sensor is given a gray value. "But on top of that," he explains, "each pixel is also assigned a distance value." This enables the drones to accurately determine their position in relation to other objects around them.

Sensor has a higher resolution than radar

The distance sensor developed by the IMS offers significant advantages over radar, which measures distances using reflected echoes. "The sensor has a much higher local resolution," says Brockherde. "Given the near-field operating conditions, radar images would be far too coarse." The flying robots are capable of identifying even small objects measuring 20 by 15 centimeters at ranges of up to 7.5 meters. Moreover, this distance information is then transmitted at the very impressive rate of 12 images per second.

Even when there is interfering light, for example when a drone is flying directly into the sun, the sensor will deliver accurate images. It operates according to the time-of-flight (TOF) process, whereby light sources emit short pulses that are reflected by objects and bounced back to the sensor. In order to prevent over-bright ambient light from masking the signal, the electronic shutter only opens for a few nanoseconds. In addition, the sensor also takes differential measurements, in which the first image is captured using ambient light only, a second is taken using the light pulse as well, and the difference between the two determines the required output signal. "All of this happens in real time," adds Brockherde.

The 3D distance sensors are built into cameras manufactured by TriDiCam, a spin-off company of Fraunhofer IMS. Jochen Noell, TriDiCam's managing director, admits: "This research project has presented us with new challenges as regards ambient operating conditions and the safety of the sensor technology." The work falls under the AVIGLE project, one of the winners of the 'Hightech.NRW' cutting-edge technology competition which receives funding from both the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia and the EU. The IMS engineers will be presenting their sensor technology at the Fraunhofer CMOS Imaging Workshop in Duisburg on June 12 and 13 this year.

Conducting intelligent aerial surveillance of major events is not the only intended use for flying robots. They could also be of benefit to disaster relief workers, and likewise to urban planners, who could utilize them to produce detailed 3D models of streets or to inspect roofs in order to establish their suitability for solar installations. Whether deployed to create virtual maps of difficult-to-access areas, to monitor construction sites or to measure contamination at nuclear power plants, these mini UAVs could potentially be used in a wide range of applications, obviating the need for expensive aerial photography and/or satellite imaging.

Did other Europeans beat Columbus to America?

An investigation worthy of a Dan Brown novel has shed new light on the voyages of John Cabot,? ?the Italian navigator and explorer, revealing that he may have? ?had? ?knowledge of European expeditions to the? "?New World?"? that predated Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage.

Although commonly credited with "discovering" America, Christopher Columbus would not reach the mainland of the New World until 1498, when he sailed to South America.?

Farther north, Cabot became the first European since Leif Ericson and the Vikings to land on North American soil when he made three voyages ?for England's Henry VII between the summers of? ?1496? ?and? ?1498.? ?The second of? ?these expeditions,? carried? ?out in? ?1497,? ?resulted in the European discovery of North America ? at Newfoundland?.

The notation ? found through some serious sleuthing of the works of Alwyn Ruddock, a deceased, secretive historian ? would also suggest that Europeans may have discovered the New World decades before both Cabot and Columbus set sail.

Found in a private Florentine archive,? ?the document records that a? payment of? ?50? ?nobles sterling was made to? "?Giovanni Chabotte?" (John Cabot?) of Venice so that? ?he could undertake expeditions? ?"to go and find the new land.?"

"This brief entry opens a whole new chapter in Cabot scholarship.? ?It shows that the Bristol voyages were part of a wider network of Italian-supported exploratory enterprises,"? ?historian Francesco Guidi-Bruscoli,? ?of the University of Florence,? ?told Discovery News.

NEWS: Columbus May Have Found Syphilis in The New World

Guidi Bruscoli,? ?who detailed his finding in the scholarly journal Historical Research,? ?noted that the short entry referred to? ?"the new land?" ("?il? ?nuovo paese?" ?in the original Italian version?)? and not to? "?a new land?" (?or? ?"un nuovo paese?")?.

"The use of the definite article? ('?il?' ?? '?the?') ?rather than the indefinite? '?a?' ('?un?' ?in Italian?)? is indeed puzzling,?" ?Guidi Bruscoli said.

The phrasing might imply that the money was given to Cabot so that he could find a land whose existence was already known.? ?The Bardi,? ?far from being disinterested patrons,? ?would have had a sound economic reason to finance what would have been an almost certain discovery.

Since Cabot's royal patent only applied to lands? "?unknown to Christians?,"? ?it seems unlikely that? "?the new land?" ?referred to here was that which Columbus had found four years earlier.

As such,? ?the note? ?may revive claims that Bristol merchants had discovered North America at an earlier time.

"Unfortunately,? ?we only have clues.? ?While the entry implies that the Bardi? ?believed in a prior discovery,? ?we can't assume this had occurred," Guidi-Bruscoli said.

The speculation receives some support, however, from a letter written in the winter of 1497/8 by an English merchant named John Day to the "Lord Grand Admira" almost certainly Christopher Columbus.

Discovered in the 1950s, the letter discussed Cabot's recently completed 1497 voyage to Newfoundland, adding it was "considered certain" that men from Bristol had already "found and discovered in the past" the said land, "as your lordship well knows."

Even more compelling evidence appeared to have existed in the archives investigated by the late historian Alwyn Ruddock, a leading expert on the Bristol discovery voyages.

According to University of Bristol historian Evan Jones, Ruddock made finds that "promised to revolutionize our understanding of Europe's engagement with North America in the three decades after 1492."

She claimed, for instance, to have found proof in Italian and Spanish sources that Bristol merchants reached the New World sometime before 1470, and that Cabot didn't die on the 1498 expedition as widely believed, but returned to England in 1500.

"She had made some extraordinary finds, but she ordered in her will the destruction of all her research following her death," said Jones, who founded the Cabot Project research initiative.

NEWS: Vikings Possibly Carried Native American to Europe

That was done in 2005, when the fiercely secretive Ruddock died aged 89. Her unpublished work ? 78 bags of notes, letters, photographs, and microfilms ? ended up in a shredder.

Another of Ruddock's claims was that Cabot was financed by an Italian bank. Following an invitation to visit the deceased historian's house in 2010, Jones and his co-researcher, Margaret Condon, discovered the source of her information ? in the form of a sticky label on an old shoe cupboard: "The Bardi firm of London" (an Italian bank).

"The Bardi firm of London ? that was all we needed to work out the identity of the Italian banking house that Ruddock kept secret for almost half a century," Jones said.

Jones and Condon contacted Guidi-Bruscoli in Florence, who was then able to locate a brief entry in the private archive of the Guicciardini family.

"Without Ruddock's sticky label, finding that small entry would have been a rather difficult task," Guidi Bruscoli admitted.

Meanwhile, Jones and his associates continue their investigation into Ruddock's secret findings.

"I have an enormous respect for Alwyn Ruddock as a scholar. But I can't respect her decision to destroy all her work. She did what is the antithesis of everything that historical research is about ? she sought to destroy all her findings. I can't and don't accept that," Jones said.

Nationals move Harper into No. 3 hole in lineup

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The question was simple enough: Why put 19-year-old Bryce Harper, the youngest player in the major leagues, in the No. 3 spot in the lineup already, only five games into his career with the Washington Nationals?

Manager Davey Johnson's answer, delivered with as straight a face as can be, was simple, too: "Why not?"

"I mean, he's swinging the bat good. He's had quality at-bats. It's what you do. I don't care if his name's Harper or whatever. Or how old he is," Johnson said before Washington hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night. "He looks like a pretty good choice to me."

Well, that sure didn't take long.

Harper is an outfielder who's been hitting seventh since being called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. He joined the Nationals to fill the roster spot vacated by usual No. 3 hitter Ryan Zimmerman, the third baseman who went on the 15-day disabled list.

Asked about his new slot in the batting order before Thursday's debut at No. 3 against Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy, Harper replied: "Am I hitting third? Oh, I didn't see that. Oh, great. Cool. I have no words for that. Just hopefully I can make something happen and get us going."

Nothing, it seems, rattles the confident kid, who entered Thursday with a .385 average, three doubles and two RBIs.

He went 3 for 4 in Washington's 5-4 victory over Arizona on Wednesday night, including a leadoff double off the wall in the ninth inning. He wound up scoring on Ian Desmond's game-ending two-run homer with two outs.

Could hitting third be daunting to a teenager still with less than a week's experience in the majors?

"I think for A guy that young, but not THAT guy that young. You know what I mean?" Desmond said. "He's going to be a 3-hole hitter or a 4-hole hitter. He's going to hit for power. He has a good eye. He's aggressive. He thrives in those at-bats. It's a good test. I think it's a good test. We're going to see what he's got."

The last time a younger player started in the third slot in a major league lineup was 1996 when Andruw Jones did it for Atlanta, STATS LLC said. B.J. Upton was 19 but older than Harper when he hit third for Tampa Bay in 2004.

Plus, as Johnson noted, there aren't a lot of other options for the Nationals at this point.

The Nationals got off to a 15-9 start, best in the NL East, despite having a lot of trouble scoring runs. Before Wednesday's comeback win, Washington had scored a total of seven runs in its previous five games, all losses.

"We're trying to find our way a little bit," Johnson said about his team's offense.

It doesn't help that Johnson can't use Zimmerman or Michael Morse, the injured slugger who was supposed to be the cleanup hitter. Plus, a couple of hours after Harper already was written in to bat third Thursday, fill-in cleanup hitter Adam LaRoche was scratched because of a sore right side muscle.

The Nationals bumped Jayson Werth up from fifth to fourth. Chad Tracy took over for LaRoche at first base, hitting fifth.

Harper was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft after finishing high school early, then spending one season as a catcher at a junior college.

"He's an aggressive hitter. He's patient. He's all the things you look for in a hitter. He's trying to get a ball he can drive, every time he gets ready to take a swing. And if it's not in the zone, he'll take it. Very seldom, he'll swing at balls out of the strike zone," Johnson said. "When you're that aggressive and that talented, sometimes you'll fish a little bit. But by and large, he's handled himself like he's been here a while."

Another ship goes away from Earth. Since Earth have been hardly polluted, ships were sent to colonize Mars. Though Wonderer 117 were not sent to Mars. It were sent to the astroid belt. Although the pollution were bad, it made evolution to go much faster. After hundred years since the first evolution 'wave', creatures and plants did not require air to live, and talk, and most of them were supernatural. Although that, they were not able to live in the hazardous level of pollution.

When the ship nearly reached it's destination, the ship started slowing down - the front engines started working, until the ship completely stopped.
All of the passengers, 20 more exactly, took the autojets - which worked on a self recovery power generators, that been used to prevent people flying to the space.

A day later.
One of the members of the project, Henry is his name, took a break from building his house inside the astroid. "Hard work, eh?" Said Henry to another member of the project, Alis. "Indeed... Hard to work when you float" Alis replied. Then, Henry saw a green, somewhat transparent thing. The "thing" seemed to... Move. "Alis, look at this!" Said Henry. Alis jumped to his astroid. "Wow... That's strange." Said Alis. Suddenly, the "thing" jumped on Henry's face. Alis screamed. "Henry!!!" Alis Jumped to her island, to bring something to hit it. When she was back, with the handrill they used to dig inside the astroids, Henry disappeared. Then she saw the "thing" below her legs. She screamed again, and she hit the "thing" with the handrill, and the "thing" flew kilometers away.

They were not alone.

This roleplay starts 50 years after the ship reached to it's destination.

What killed Lenin? Stress ... and maybe poison

Stress, a genetic predisposition to strokes and possibly even poison hastened the death of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, medical investigators reported Friday. But syphilis? Not so much.

UCLA neurologist Harry Vinters and Russian historian Lev Lurie reviewed Lenin's medical records, autopsy and family history for an annual University of Maryland School of Medicine conference on famous people's deaths. Past conferences have reviewed the diagnoses for personages ranging from King Tut to Abraham Lincoln.

Lenin was debilitated by several strokes before dying in 1924 at the age of 53, but that raises questions about why he fell victim to such attacks at a relatively young age ? and whether those strokes were enough to push him over the edge.

An autopsy found that blood vessels in his brain were extremely hardened, results that have been difficult to understand, said Philip Mackowiak, who organizes the yearly event. "No. 1, he's so young, and No. 2, he has none of the important risk factors," Mackowiak told The Associated Press.

Lenin didn't smoke ? he never let smokers near him. He also didn't have diabetes, wasn't overweight, and the autopsy didn't find any evidence of high blood pressure, Mackowiak said.

There was "considerable suspicion" among Russians at the time of Lenin's death that syphilis was to blame, Mackowiak said.

Vinters said Lenin was treated for syphilis using the primitive medications available at the time. "Syphilis was fairly common in those days," he said. But Vinters saw no evidence in Lenin's symptoms or the autopsy that syphilis was a factor in Lenin's strokes.

Vinters said genetic predisposition to a hardening of the arteries was more likely to have played a role in Lenin's decline. He noted that the Soviet leader's father died due to similar causes at the age of 54.

Stress also is a risk factor for strokes, and there's no question the communist revolutionary was under plenty of that. "When someone's trying to assassinate you, that's pretty stressful," Vinters said.

Lurie, a St. Petersburg-based expert in Russian history and politics who also planned to speak at this week's conference in Baltimore, told AP that while Lenin had several strokes, he believes Josef Stalin may have finished him off with poison.

Lenin's health had been growing worse over time. In 1921, he forgot the words of a major speech, and he had to learn to speak again and write with his left hand after one stroke. A major stroke later left him paralyzed on one side, confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak.

In photos taken at the time, Lenin "really looked like an 80-year-old," Vinters said.

However, Lurie said Lenin had recovered enough in early 1924 that he celebrated the new year and went hunting. Lenin, who supported Stalin's rise to power, may have realized he made a mistake and began aligning himself with Leon Trotsky, which caused Stalin to poison Lenin, the historian said.

    1. Zombie ants fight fungus with fungus

In a bizarre twist, scientists say the parasitic fungus that takes over ant brains is itself falling prey to another fungus ? a hyperparasite that enables some ant colonies to survive the zombie attack.

Lurie said poisoning was one of Stalin's favorite methods of disposing of enemies. He suggested that it might be worth doing an analysis on tissue from Lenin's brain, which is still preserved in Moscow ? but Vinters was doubtful.

"There was actually a lab of the secret police that was focused on designing poisons that would never be detected after they had done their job," Vinters said. "It'll remain a mystery, basically."

Lenin's embalmed body still lies on public display in a Red Square mausoleum, almost 20 years after the collapse of the communist state he helped bring to life. Vinters, who reviewed autopsy records and the leader's clinical history, said toxicology tests that might have revealed poisoning were not conducted during the autopsy. Reports from the time also show Lenin was active and talking a few hours before his death.

"And then he experienced a series of really, really bad convulsions, which is quite unusual for someone who has a stroke," Vinters said.

Poisoned or not, Lenin's autopsy records clearly show that disease had taken a fatal toll, Vinters said. "Vascular disease, either strokes or heart disease, almost certainly would have taken him out in the next few months," he said.

If a patient with Lenin's symptoms came into a doctor's office today, he'd probably be put on lipid-lowering drugs, Vinters said. "He could have been placed on something like Lipitor," Vinters said. "Theoretically, he could have had some interventional work done as well."

Such medical interventions might include inserting a catheter or stents into the blood vessels to clear away the plaque. During his years as vice president, Dick Cheney underwent angioplasty, stent insertions and surgery to address his cardiovascular problems. In March, Cheney received a heart transplant at the age of 71.

Vinters said the University of Maryland School of Medicine's annual checkup on long-dead historical figures offered an opportunity to assess the progress of medical care over the course of decades, centuries and millennia.

"It's very interesting to look at this from a historical perspective," he said. "It's instructive to see how far we've come in understanding cardiovascular disease."

Ted Nugent explodes on morning show interview

Ted Nugent lived up to his "Motor City Madman" reputation during a television interview with "CBS Morning News."

The rocker, hunter and political activist sat down with Jeff Glor in his first on-camera appearance since being interviewed by the Secret Service for comments about President Barack Obama made during recent a National Rifle Association meeting in St. Louis.

The cordial interview from Nugent's Texas ranch took a bizarre turn when Glor hinted that for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney to win he'll need support from moderates. Nugent said he was not moderate and ...

"Call me," Nugent continued in a raised, irritated voice, "when you meet someone who does that more than I do. Because that's really moderate. In fact, you know what that is? That's extreme. ... I'm an extremely loving, passionate man, and people who investigate me honestly, without the baggage of political correctness, ascertain the conclusion that I'm a damned nice guy. ... And if you can find a screening process more powerful than that, I'll [expletive]. Or [expletive]. How's that sound?"

Glor explained later the second part of the tirade was directed to a female CBS producer who was off-camera.

In an more pleasant exchange earlier in the interview, Nugent told Glor the meeting with the secret service was "adorable." The musician hinted he told the agents they should be investigating their bosses.

He went on to further describe the meeting:

I don't think their concern was that I threatened someone. I think their concern is that someone claimed I threatened someone. In fact, I got to tell you, and I don't mean to put any professionals on the spot, but ? and I don't have the greatest hearing in the world ? but I thought I heard something to the point of, "I didn't think so."

Nugent blamed his energy on a kidney stone, which was removed right after the interview in an emergency room.
