Jane Crockett: My Kids Don't Agree That A Little Work Never Hurt Anyone...

"I've got a little project for you, girls," my father cheerfully announced over lunch.

I can't speak for my sisters, but the simple phrase struck dread in my very core -- dread that another Saturday (or Sunday or Monday afternoon or holiday) would be lost to that annoying farm concept: work. Whether the project was cutting corn out of beans, picking up rocks in the field, cleaning the hog barn or painting -- worse yet, scraping -- the barn, Dad listened good-naturedly to our whines and complaints before reminding us to shut the screen door on the way out. We sulked before decrying, once again, that so much work would Scar Us For Life!!

I'll never own swine again, but what I'd give for that farm now! Although work isn't strictly a rural phenomenon, those fields, woods and barns would sure come in handy as I struggle to raise children who know how to work. And in my vast, albeit not comprehensive parenting research, How To Work Hard doesn't even make the topic list for manuals, websites, books or PTA discussions. So we all go at it alone. There is no work whisperer. And there is no manure to scoop.

We chuckle at generational lore when grandparents and parents milked dairy cattle before school or carried buckets of water from the pump... or simply rose from the couch to change the television station which, only a few years back, was a chore. Minus the "maintenance" value of this work, what did youth learn in tackling it? It's hard to quantify, but parents (including yours truly) love the anecdote when trying to teach or instill values. So we warn about a time when children worked the farm or factories as a mandatory contribution to the family. But it's just a warning, nothing more. Arguably, at any economic level in the Western world, we do not depend on child labor for sustenance unless it's pancakes on Sunday morning. There are laws that prohibit underage labor, and rightly so. [Or unrightly so ...but you didn't read this here.] To this end, teaching the value of work becomes less imperative and more programmatic, as in Phase X of childrearing, somewhere between green living and global thinking.

Convenience has further made child labor obsolete by simultaneously decreasing manual tasks in the home and infiltrating kids' brains, replacing responsibility with remote control. Witness the dishwasher and Playstation, often humming in perfect unison in the large kitchen/great room. I vividly remember my older sister bemoaning how difficult it was to teach my nieces and nephew to work. Newly married and annoyingly confident about my future in parenting, I listened, commented sympathetically and thought, Not Me. Of course, now I realize how idealistic those pre-kid thoughts were. It is darn hard to instill a work ethic!

So why is work -- those onerous chores and tasks of my youth -- now so appealing, so charming, so necessary? It isn't necessary, some would argue. In fact, it no longer matters that we don't tackle this difficult challenge. If kids put forth effort in school and extra-curricular activities, why bother learning how to work outside of these intrinsically and ego-centrically motivated actions? A recent spate of books and articles about the Me generation perhaps points to an unfortunate consequence of this thinking. Simply working towards my goals -- not those of the larger whole -- doesn't support family, community, the planet or any other big ideas that bind us humans together. Failing to teach our children about the value of hard work not directly related to their academic, sport or extracurricular record seems, well, so very unfarmly.

Should we assume there's something meaningful in a work ethic that extends beyond personal gain?

Really... what meaning does a 10 year-old find in scraping a white barn in July other than the sun's glare on peeling paint is extraordinarily blinding? For my siblings and me, there was no opting out of work after school, on weekends and school vacations. The list of chores was a mile long with only seasonal tasks completed before being replaced with the change in temperature. It was exactly this futility of thinking the end was in sight that led us to discover the true meaning of a work ethic: cultivate a good habit because your efforts are never finished. The means are more important than an end that is not in sight. (This is so depressing that I need to counterbalance by writing about the play ethic.)

So, although it seems silly, I've come to treat work as an extracurricular activity, scheduling whine-inducing 'projects' right there with baseball, circus and Irish dance. (And lessons in Irish dance, I've discovered, make buffing the floor much easier.) I'll confess, I'm a little embarrassed to tell my parents I have to schedule work -- to admit, in fact, that my kids have it so much easier than we did and that I'm a little uneasy about this rather than feeling like the next generation has triumphed. An advanced texter does not always trump an advanced window washer.

Hard labor, back-breaking chores (or just really time-consuming, tedious, mundane ones) are no longer part of kids' daily lives, which could arguably make kids borderline... shhh... lazy. Yes, I defy the psychologists by putting lazy and kids in the same sentence. Simply put: can we afford to raise a nation of L children? No! We need to instill that Can-Do, Will-Do, Must-Do attitude for future generations. These seem to be valuable lessons, and I get my garden weeded at the same time. Anytime we can multitask our parenting duties, bully for us.

Perhaps there is no more hard work for my children to do, but to work hard will never fail them.

"Girls! I have a little project..."

Dan Rather Reports: Lost children of 'baby scoop' era

In the 1950?s, 60?s and 70?s, being an unwed mother carried a significant stigma in America. It?s now called the ?baby scoop? era and during this time young women -- usually in their teens -- were either hidden at home, sent to live with distant relatives or quietly dispatched to maternity homes to give birth.

Estimates are as many as 1.5 million young mothers who say they were forced -- some just minutes after delivery -- to hand over their babies for adoption during this period. ?It was a decision that they seldom made on their own. Mostly, it was preordained by the young woman?s church or her parents. ?Often too, it was a decision that was dictated by the social customs of the time because having a baby out of wedlock was seen as a disgrace to a family.

[Related: Adopted or abducted?]

Since last October, Dan Rather Reports has interviewed nearly one hundred women from around the world who shared a common experience: They say during this time they were lied to, denied their rights and duped into handing over their babies for adoption. And, they believe, it is time to lift the veil of secrecy.

Last month I interviewed two people with very different stories to tell that suggests perhaps some of the policies and practices of the past that led to forced adoptions lingered into the 80?s and beyond. ?

Marc Mezibov is an attorney who represented a woman who claims to have been manipulated into handing over her newborn for adoption in 1965 when she was 16 years old. But the story is much more sordid than that.

In a lawsuit filed against the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 2004, Mezibov?s client, known as ?Jane Doe?, claimed that the father of her child was her parish priest.

?The priest and her elementary school teacher, who's a nun, and her parents, are all telling her basically, ?You need to get things right with the church?,?Mezibov told me. ??And to do the right thing means to keep quiet about the parentage of your child and not to bring any trouble to the church's door.? ?

Mezibov says his client was intimidated into relinquishing her parental rights to the baby and as a result had been separated from her child for about 40 years.

?She was told, ?The fact that you have this out-of-wedlock child with a priest is your fault and your fault alone. ?The public must never know that the father of your child is a priest.??

?And the priest told her, ?Look, you have to do the right thing. The right thing is -- give up the child -- don't ever tell anyone that I was the father. And, by the way, I'll have to leave the church if the church is required to pay child support for this child.??

It took about 40 years for ?Jane Doe? to come forward with the allegations. When asked why it took so long Mezibov said, ?This was a question of coming to grips with the reality of the situation and having the courage to face the situation. This is many years after considerable psychotherapy, some hospitalizations and a lot of emotional pain to get to this point.?

And then there is Claudia Corrigan D?Arcy. She claims at age 19, she experienced a much more subtle form of coercion that led her to hand over her son for adoption in 1987.

As an unwed teen, D?Arcy says the social stigma against keeping your baby was not much better than it was in 1965.

D?Arcy told me, ?If you were stupid enough to get pregnant, and then to keep your baby there was something wrong with you. Smart girls didn't do that.? She added, ?I was a smart girl.?

During an in-depth interview in New York City at the beginning of April, D?Arcy told me how she was sent from the comfort and familiar surroundings of her Long Island home to the Boston area during her last month of pregnancy. ?

D?Arcy says she didn?t realize it at the time, but looking back feels that the adoption agency was actually a place where helpfulness and support masked a hidden agenda.

Claudia Corrigan D?Arcy at 19-years-old.

?Leaving my home, leaving my family, leaving the people around me, going amongst strangers. It was a very supportive environment because everybody had a vested interest in my relinquishment once I was in the agency.?

I asked her if she considered her experience with the agency in Massachusetts coercive.? ?At the time, no,? she said. ? With the knowledge that I have now, yes.?

Meanwhile, Ohio attorney Marc Mezibov says his client ?Jane Doe?, ?was from a devout Catholic family. She was taken out of her parochial high school and shipped off to a maternity home soon after her family learned that she had become pregnant. ?

Nearly fifty years after the relinquishment, ?Jane Doe? continues to maintain her anonymity, but her story made headlines after the lawsuit was filed in December 2004.

Mezibov says he feels the most troublesome aspect of what the Catholic Church did was taking a mother and a child and separating them for life. ?It shouldn't be because some outside force is imposing their will on you,? he said.

We heard lots of stories from women of ??Jane Doe?s? generation, but we were surprised to learn that women a generation younger still felt manipulated or coerced into giving up their baby for adoption.

But the approach in 1987, according to D?Arcy was different. She says the adoption agency wanted her to feel good about helping to ?create a family? in order to secure a signature of relinquishment. The end result was the same for D?Arcy and ?Jane Doe.?

Claudia Corrigan D?Arcy holding her newborn son, Max.

D?Arcy says she spent a two days together with her son before signing the papers to relinquish him.

?Adoption was supposed to be this one thing that happened that was going to allow me to continue on my life as if I did not have a baby. ?And yet, 25 years later, I'm sitting here talking to you because this has been the single most life altering thing that has ever happened to me and has changed the course of my entire life,? she told me. ?And not just for me, but for my other children, for my husband, for family members. The ripples and the effect on everybody, and yet they don't tell you that.?

When asked what had happened to change her opinions about adoption, D?Arcy stated simply, ?I got the Internet.?

Claudia Corrigan D?Arcy reunited with her son Max in 2007.

In 2007, D?Arcy was reunited with her son, which she continues to refer to as ?Max,? the name she had given him at birth 20 years earlier.

About ten months after D?Arcy and Max happily reconnected, Mezibov and his client had a less happy ending -- their lawsuit was thrown out in January 2008 by the Ohio State Supreme Court on grounds that the statute of limitations had run out.

Mezibov told me, ?It remains my opinion that the court was wrong to give the church a pass when they got what they wanted. ?And for her to give up the child and for her not to pursue any claims.?

Today, D?Arcy is the mother of four, and lives in upstate New York, and has a blog dedicated to adoption reform.

?People need to realize that adoption is not warm and fuzzy,? says D?Arcy. Adoption is supposed to be about finding homes for children that need it, not finding children for parents that want them.?

EDITOR?S NOTE:

We should point out that adoption is not always about painful separation. Thousands of successful adoptions take place every year across the country and many new families are created. And the percentage today of forced adoptions is a fraction of what it was during a time in this country called by some scholars as the perfect storm. ?It was a period before oral contraception, before abortion and at the height of the sexual revolution. At its peak, nearly nine percent of babies born to never married mothers were adopted. Today that figure is around one percent.

NCAA Baseball 2012: Josh Turley Leads Bears To Record Home Win Streak Friday

Ace junior southpaw Josh Turley pitched beyond the call of duty on Friday night, as he carried a no-hitter into the eighth in a 5-0 Baylor win over New Mexico State. The win was Baylor's 19th straight at home, setting a school record for a home winning streak.

Turley (7-0, 1.74) allowed a single to Tanner Waite in the eighth that ended his evening at 106 pitches, after he struck out five and gave up two walks. Crayton Bare and Joey Hainsfurther closed down the win for Baylor, combining for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Bears' offense did little in the first five innings, as starter Ryan Beck kept posting zeroes for the Aggies. In the sixth, a walk and three straight singles plated one run for Baylor, and Cal Towey capped the rally with a two-run double. Jake Miller went 2-for-4 and knocked in another run in the eighth.

THE BEST supplements youre NOT using! Dont miss this?.? | Health ...

I spent the day learning from 4 of North Americas foremost authorities on sports?nutrition and performance at the ISSN seminar in Orlando, Florida today.

?Events like this show their enormous value in the fact that EVERY conclusion presented?is direct result of professionally run, doctor supervised studies. ?NO BS bro-science here!

The take-home messages from today were incredible, and applicable IMMEDIATELY to?YOUR training AND mine!

A lot of the seminar was based around pre workout, peri workout and post workout?nutrition.

    PRE-WORKOUT

-one of the points that every presenter wanted to drive home was something that?everyone reading this email already knows, because I ask it before ever giving an answer?to a question......

WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?First and foremost it is necessary to determine what exactly youre trying to do. Each?person is different, has different goals, and have different chemistry.

The general consensus about what supplements should be taken pre workout seem to?be HMB, glycocarn, BCAA (or EAA), creatine and possibly a carb (which, as is explained??in MI40, is dependent on your goals, as well as your "limiting factor").
    PERI WORKOUT(DURING WORKOUT)

The primary focus was on reducing what is termed "oxidative stress". Basically the?stress resulting from an increased oxygen consumption that occurs from intense?exercise.

It was said that the best ways to reduce oxidative stress(also known as "the ageing?process") was to supplement with Vitamins C, E, and selenium.

Alpha lipoic acid, and SOD were also mentioned as being large contributors to minimizing??the harmful effects of exercise.

Dosages are dependent on size of the individual and the amount of stress placed on the?body during exercise.

POST WORKOUTIt is well known that post workout nutrition is THE number one most important factor?in improved performance and muscle growth.

It is IMPERATIVE to halt the catabolic processes initiated by exercise immediately with?a carbohydrate supplement and amino acids or protein supplement. (hydrolyzed whey or?whey isolate like ISO-FLEX are proven to be best).

It was said that the most important things to be consuming post workout are obviously?carbs, Branch Chain Aminos, and glycocarn, and creatine monohydrate (still proven to?be the best type of creatine)I added my own twist to this post workout nutrition segment with something I learned?very recently about GREENS being the number one way to increase NO2 production?in the body (oh ya, it was also proven to be common knowledge the Arginine has NO?effect on this).

These type of conferences prove very valuable because they help to completely?dispel all the BS that we are bombarded with on a daily basis about new fads and?the next revolutionary product.

The truth is, basics are basics for a reason and no one is really creating anything new...?atleast not yet!

Supplements with a positive review:Whey isolate

Creatine (shown to have no negative effects)

    BCAA

    HMB acid

    caffeine (not coffee)

LEUCINE (yes this is bold, so take notice!)

    Omega 3

    Greens(Bens addition ;))

I wish everyone 10lbs of NEW MUSCLE GROWTH!!

    BOOM!

Backstreet Boys Welcome Back Kevin Richardson

'Kevin is coming back!' band announces at London concert over the weekend.

Kevin Richardson is Backstreet's Back, all right. The fifth member of the Backstreet Boys has announced that he is formally rejoining the group after leaving in June 2006.

In footage posted on their website from their show with New Kids on the Block at London's O2 Arena, BSB member Nick Carter told the excited room, "I think we should let them in on the secret we have. Since we love you guys so much, especially in London, that we are going to come back, we are going to be back in July to record the next Backstreet Boys album this year."

While that bit of news had the crowd cheering, it was what Brian Littrell shared that really got the room screaming. "There's two parts to that secret," he said. "And Kevin is coming back!" They then added that they might play shows with all 10 members of NKOTBSB.

Though Richardson left the group six years ago, he has made sporadic concert appearances with the band, including one on the Backstreet Boys cruise back in December. Still, the remaining members of the band always were skeptical that a full-fledged reunion would ever take place.

On Twitter, they had this additional message for their fans. "Now everything is back to normal ... Welcome back @kevinrichardson." For his part, Kevin seemed pretty stoked about being reunited with his band of brothers, adding on his Twitter, "Hello beau-ti-ful people. Yes, the cat is OFFICIALLY out of the bag. It's on and crackin!"

Richardson's return wasn't the only big news the guys of BSB had for fans. A.J. McLean posted a video message revealing that he and his wife, Rochelle, are expecting their first child together. "Because we love you all so much, we wanted to share with you for the first time something very special: We're having a baby!" the couple said in the video message. "See you guys soon."

Voting in round two of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Things to Know Before You Purchase Bird Cages ? Bird Articles

Having a pet bird can be a wonderful experience but it also implies a lot of responsibility. Keeping a pet bird does not only mean that you feed it and change its paper as required. You will also have to make sure that the bird is healthy and happy. A comfortable and safe bird cage is one the basic requirements for your pet bird. A bird cage should provide an environment closest to the natural habitat of the bird. There are four main factors that you need to take into consideration while purchasing a home for your beloved pet: functionality, durability, modern style and effective service. You will find several types of cages for birds in the market, including:

Wooden Bird Cages: These cages are like beautiful pieces of furniture. Usually there is a metal cage within a wooden cage. The wooden cages are handcrafted in quality woods like solid oak or cheery wood. These cages are available in various shades.

Small Bird Cages: These cages are perfect for small birds like canaries, budgies, parrots, lovebirds, java sparrows, and so on. The cages should be spacious for the little birds and should have one or two wood perches for comfortable seating. A round cage is good if your birds like to climb. The cages should have a half inch or less bar spacing.

Medium Bird Cages: These cages are meant for birds like weavers, cockatiels, conures, and senegals. A Victorian bird cage is good if your bird like to climb. The spacing of the cage should be 1/2 to 3/4 inches.

Large Bird Cages: These cages are prefect for birds like Amazons, cockatoos, or macaws. The bar spacing of the cage should be 1 1/4 inches or more.

There are several features of a bird cage that requires consideration. The paint used for the cage should be safe for the bird. High levels of toxic elements like zinc, lead, should not be used for the cages. The nonporous finishes and removable trays or drawers are good and useful for the daily cleaning of the cage surface and the removal of the food and other waste from the cage. There should be ample dishes for food and water.

You can find a wide selection of bird cages in online stores. It is recommended that before you make a purchase, make sure you have sufficient information about the shipping policies, guarantee, and return and exchanges policy of the store. You should compare prices and consider all the different accessories offered as a part of the package by different companies.

Wayward dolphin scared back into wetlands by other dolphins

On Friday, human spectators scared a confused dolphin into staying in the shallow waters of Orange County's Bolsa Chica Wetlands, wildlife officials said.

On Saturday, it was a group of dolphins that frightened the stranded marine animal back into the wetlands nature preserve as rescuers attempted to guide it back to the open sea.

"It's been an interesting day so far," said Peter Wallerstein, a marine biologist with the Marine Animal Rescue service.

Wallerstein and five state Department of Fish and Game officers took to paddle boards Saturday morning to encourage the 7-foot dolphin to continue swimming to freedom after they noticed that it had swum several hundred yards closer to Huntington Harbour, which spills into the ocean.

The six paddle-boarders managed to shoo the dolphin a few hundred yards farther and into the harbor when the animal noticed another group of dolphins swimming in circles ahead of it.

Apparently frightened, the wayward dolphin turned around and dived deep into the harbor, swimming beneath the paddle-boarders and a bridge and back into the wetlands.

By noontime Wallerstein and the state officers had decided "to stand down for now," as the marine biologist put it.

"After 27 years I know not to celebrate prematurely," said Wallerstein, who acknowledged that he was surprised that the stranded dolphin seemed frightened of the other dolphins. "We're assuming they're from his pod," the group of dolphins he originally swam into the wetlands with while chasing a school of fish to eat, he said. After entering the wetlands, the other dolphins turned around and retraced their route out of the Bolsa Chica lagoon.

Wallenstein said the stranded dolphin still seemed to be strong and healthy and capable of escaping the lagoon on his own. "He proved he can get out if he wants to. There are no red flags. I'm not concerned," he said.

Still, he urged spectators to stay away from the dolphin so it does not become distracted or confused by people in the water or along the shoreline.

El Segundo-based Marine Animal Rescue has come to the assistance of 92 marine animals so far this year, he said. Most of those rescues have involved seals and sea lions.
