Sprint Galaxy Nexus unboxing and hands-on

It's been many months in coming, but the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is finally available on Sprint. For all intents and purposes, it's the same Galaxy Nexus we've come to know and love over the past five months or so. Same 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display at 720x1280 resolution. Same 32GB of storage. Same 1GB of memory. And, like the other versions of the Galaxy Nexus, it's running the latest version of Android, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. (For those of you who worry about such things, it's running the latest version, Android 4.0.4, out of the box.) It's also got the same 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with zero shutter lag. Huzzah.

The big seller here, of course, is that the Galaxy Nexus is one of Sprint's first LTE-enabled phones. That's the good news. The bad news is that Sprint hasn't yet turned on its LTE network. So it's 3G-only for now. But once that switch is flipped, we're expecting to see some impressive data speeds. Oh, and because we're talking Sprint here, it's also got Google Wallet built in from the outset. So there's that.

Check out our official unboxing and initial hands-on above.

This photo taken Friday, April 27, 2012, shows an aerial view over northern Uganda. Some locals in Gulu in northern Uganda have other concerns that complicate the military mission of forces now hunting for Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony, such as the fear of reprisal attacks if they are thought to be helping the authorities find him, or concerns that troops hunting him will not be able to distinguish between the regular LRA fighters and their abducted children. (AP) ? Ugandan officials are renewing a claim made with some frequency over the years: That rebel leader Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army are receiving backing from the government of Sudan.

Ugandan forces commander Gen. Aronda Nyakairima said Monday he found credible a recent report from a captured LRA fighter saying that Kony was recently in the southern region of Sudan.

Col. Felix Kulayigye, the military's spokesman, said some of the LRA rebels captured by the Ugandan military wore "new uniforms" supplied by Sudan, though Nyakairima said military officials have not found LRA fighters with weapons supplied by Sudan.

President Barack Obama sent 100 U.S. forces into Central Africa last year to help regional militaries track Kony, and an online campaign this year by the advocacy group Invisible Children made Kony a YouTube sensation.

"Kony has always been a pawn in the Khartoum chess game over South Sudan. They have used him before and they hope to use him again to destabilize South Sudan," Kulayigye said.

Abdulla Ali Masar, Sudan's information minister, denied his government has ever supported the LRA.

"We have no relationship, whatsoever, with this Ugandan rebel and we have not supported and are not supporting him now," Masar said. He said Kony "is nearer to South Sudan than to us and, in any case, we have no reason to support him. We rely on our own forces and we do not need anybody to support us in defending our country and ourselves."

The accusations by Uganda that Sudan is aiding Kony come as the threat of war between Sudan and South Sudan has increased. The two sides have launched multiple cross-border attacks and Sudan has launched airstrikes in recent weeks.

Ugandan officials have long accused Khartoum of supporting the LRA in retaliation for Uganda's support of the rebel movement known as the SPLA, which is now South Sudan's military. South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year after voting for independence.

Okello Oryem, Uganda's foreign affairs minister, told The Associated Press on Monday the LRA would have been long ago eliminated had it not been backed by Sudan.

"It's been universally known that the LRA has been receiving support from elements within the Khartoum government or the Sudan Armed Forces," Oryem said. He said Khartoum still gives Kony medicine, guns and uniforms ? "the kinds of things a rebel wants."

Kulayigye said that last week there were reports of Kony's presence in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi told three U.S. lawmakers who visited with him in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in early April that Kony may still be getting supplies from Sudan.

"The original plan of Sudan was to use Kony to destabilize the region," he said. "They wanted to use the LRA to attack Chad. Kony was central to this plan ... . Kony still has some assistance, not much; it's covert assistance. "

Ugandan officials are concerned that Kony, whose brutal group has navigated the region's porous borders in a highly successful campaign of murder and the abduction of children, could exploit renewed border tensions between Sudan and South Sudan to get back near Ugandan territory.

Some analysts say the conflict between the north and south is just what the LRA needs: the opportunity to be courted and then used in a proxy war.

Angelo Izama, a Kampala-based political analyst with the security think tank Fanaka Kwawote, said it was "the perfect time" for Kony to be influential again within the region.

"I have no doubt in my mind that it is the intention of the north (to use the LRA)," he said. "The LRA has always been a beneficiary of the fight between the north and the south."

The U.S. troops helping hunt Kony are in four regional countries affected by the LRA.

The Ugandan military has since 2008 focused on the Central African Republic, and the top Ugandan commander there insists the warlord is hiding somewhere in the vast jungle. Col. Joseph Balikuddembe told an AP reporter on Sunday that Kony is in the Central African Republic. U.S. officials believe he is likely there as well.

Ugandan foot soldiers said they rarely encounter LRA rebels. Some complained of boredom, saying they were tired of spending their days looking for a phantom enemy, and others said the endless search through treacherous jungle was frustrating. The rank-and-file soldiers said they would like to be deployed in the Congo, where most of the attacks by suspected LRA have been reported in recent times.

Ugandan army officials say there are no more than 200 LRA fighters and that the rebels move in very small groups to avoid being detected. There is no LRA presence in Uganda, where the group's rebellion started out as a popular uprising by northerners against Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's southern-dominated government.

LG launches LG Cloud, blows raspberries at S-Cloud

Image

Four days before the purported launch of Samsung's cloud service, Korea's other technology giant has unveiled LG Cloud. The eponymous service offers 5GB free space as standard, while owners of LG's Smart TVs or smartphones will get 50GB free for six months. It'll push content between your devices, appropriately compressed for the medium, so high definition images on your TV will be slimmed down to save your phone's data cap. The free beta begins in South Korea and the US from May 1st, with a global rollout pencilled in for next year -- but don't worry, the company made it clear you'll be able to use it on your holidays, if you can find a signal.

Microsoft's Nook deal a real 'game-changer'

CNBC's Jon Fortt reports on the partnership between Microsoft and Barnes & Noble. Rafe Needleman, CNET editor-at-large, explains what this big bet could mean for Microsoft.

By Martha C. White

The idea of going into a bookstore and walking out with a tablet or other device might sound contradictory, but it could be the future for Barnes & Noble (BKS).?

The bookseller announced this morning a plan to spin off its digital and college divisions into a subsidiary and partner with Microsoft? (MSFT) in a digital reading venture the two companies have dubbed Newco. The Windows creator will invest $300 million in return for a 17.6 percent equity stake in the new business.?Goldman Sachs analyst Matthew Fassler?called the deal a "game-changer."?

Barnes & Noble?shares surged about 60 percent Monday on news. Microsoft shares were flat.

"To me, the key takeaway is this guarantees the long-term viability of the Nook," said?Bob O'Donnell, an analyst at IDC.

From a technology angle, it makes sense: Microsoft and Barnes & Noble need each other to better compete in the e-reader and tablet business.?Fassler wrote, "Our biggest concern for BKS has been its ability to compete against AAPL (Apple) and AMZN (Amazon), two of the deepest-pocketed players in the technology and media world. NewCo now has an equally deep-pocketed partner."

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of NBC Universal and?Microsoft.)

Barnes & Noble needs Microsoft's global scale and money to grow its ebook business beyond the United States. Amazon has been aggressively rolling out its Kindle reader worldwide; it announced earlier this month that the?Kindle Touch 3G is available in more than 175 countries.?"It appears strategic to Microsoft to put more skin in the game by partnering with BKS for digital content supply and creation for both the U.S. and international markets," Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund wrote in response to the announcement.

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft?also have settled their patent litigation, the companies said.

Microsoft needs Barnes & Noble's presence on college campuses and its textbook business to help it compete against Apple's educational offerings. "Microsoft will want to make sure that ... there is a counter balance to Apple?s growing partnerships for content and creation of interactive educational content," Sherlund wrote.??

It's also a fascinating peek into what could be the future of the bookseller's retail presence. The two companies confirmed the development of a Nook app for Windows 8 but didn't offer any more details about whether or not the bookstores could become a sales channel for Microsoft.?

It's an idea that could benefit both brands, though. Roughly two years ago, Barnes & Noble gave its Nook e-reader a big push with spacious in-store kiosks that have been compared to the Apple store in concept and design. At the time, analysts praised the idea of letting people play around with the devices and ask knowledgeable salespeople how to use them.?

Even as the number of books read on tablets or e-readers increases, Barnes & Noble seems committed to its physical stores, said Michael Norris, senior analyst of the Trade Books Group at Simba Information. "The actual value proposition of a physical store is clearly there," he said, pointing out that Apple's retail presence boosts its brand image as well as its sales figures.

Although the market for e-books continues to climb, analysts say paper books are never going to disappear entirely. The amount of store square footage needed to house this inventory will probably shrink, though, and Barnes & Noble has an enormous real estate footprint. Filling it with more electronics could make sense.?

Microsoft has experimented with branded retail locations in the past, and it has a handful of Microsoft stores around the country, but the response from consumers has been underwhelming. (From tech bloggers, it's been downright derisive.) Being able to sell products under an existing, well-run and admired brand's umbrella would be a good solution.

Analysts also speculate Microsoft could create products designed specifically for the e-reader market.?The deal "rais[es] the question of whether MSFT will develop additional mobile devices that can enhance the sale of ebooks," Fassler wrote.?The Nook currently runs on the open-source Android operating system.

With Circuit City long gone and Best Buy planning a future of fewer and smaller stores, Barnes & Noble could be an attractive alternative for Microsoft, especially if it had more control over the sales process than it would via a third-party channel.?"If something was to ever happen to Best Buy... people still need to buy electronics, so where are they going to go?" O'Donnell said. "Maybe there's an interesting opportunity for Barnes & Noble."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: biophotovoltaic table, giant rubber ducky and cushions of shredded cash

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Image

Buon giorno! Milan Design Week 2012 is in the rear-view mirror now, but we're still sifting through the incredible furniture, lighting and technology that was showcased all throughout the city this year. Inhabitat sent a couple of correspondents to report on everything that was on display, and they didn't disappoint. We featured a nifty biophotovoltaic table that uses moss to generate electricity through photosynthesis. We also caught wind of a digital camera that IKEA unveiled in Milan that's made of cardboard. And given our love for terrariums, we were pretty excited to find this pendant lamp that doubles as a vegetable garden at this year's fair. But the star of the Milan show this year had to be British designer Tom Dixon, who rolled out countless innovative lamp designs, including the gorgeous Etch Light, which casts geometric shadows all over the room -- and he even invited visitors to design their own flat-pack lamps!

'Avengers' hurtles to $178.4M overseas debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The superhero saga "The Avengers" lived up to its blockbuster buzz with $178.4 million in overseas ticket sales days before it opens in U.S. theaters.

Domestic audiences generally passed on a bunch of new flicks as fans seem to be in anticipation mode for Disney's "The Avengers," which debuts Friday in the United States after launching in 39 other countries a week earlier.

The huge overseas launch will help fan the frenzy already in place for "The Avengers," the superhero mash-up of Marvel Comics idols whose cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson.

"You hope that the magnitude of this kind of opening sends a signal that this is a for-everyone film," said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. "You can't put up these kinds of numbers if it's just for guys or just for the fans. These numbers say that it is for everyone, 8 to 80."

The Sony Screen Gems ensemble comedy "Think Like a Man" was No. 1 domestically for the second-straight weekend with $18 million.

Four movies were bunched up for the No. 2 spot in the $11 million range: Sony's animated comedy "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" with $11.4 million; the Warner Bros. romantic drama "The Lucky One" with $11.3 million; Lionsgate's blockbuster "The Hunger Games" with $11.25 million; and Universal's romantic comedy "The Five-Year Engagement" with $11.2 million.

Those four flicks were so close that their rankings from Sunday studio estimates could change once final numbers are released Monday.

Along with "Pirates," whose voice cast was led by Hugh Grant, and "Five-Year Engagement," which stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, the other newcomers were Jason Statham's action tale "Safe" from Lionsgate at No. 6 with $7.7 million and John Cusack's Edgar Allan Poe mystery "The Raven" from Relativity Media at No. 7 with $7.3 million.

"I think going to the movies will be the No. 1 priority next weekend but clearly was not the No. 1 priority this weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "There's so much anticipation for 'The Avengers' that the newcomers kind of got lost in the shuffle."

"The Hunger Games" climbed to $372.5 million domestically, putting it less than $10 million behind last year's "Harry Potter" finale, the top-grossing entry of that fantasy franchise.

"Think Like a Man" raised its domestic total to $60.9 million, while "The Lucky One" lifted its haul to $39.9 million.

Along with the United States, "The Avengers" has yet to open in other big markets that include Japan, China and Russia.

Among the overseas totals for "The Avengers": $24.7 million in Great Britain; $19.7 million in Australia; $15.9 million in Mexico; $12.9 million in South Korea; and $12.9 million in France.

Directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), "The Avengers" has strong word-of-mouth domestically from fans who were able to see advanced screenings.

Critics also have given the film high marks, and the publicity blast from the overseas revenues could push the movie into record-debut territory. The "Harry Potter" finale now has the top opening weekend domestically with $169.2 million, followed by "The Dark Knight" with $158.4 million and "The Hunger Games" with $152.5 million.

"Who knows?" Disney's Hollis said. "It's a film that comes with very high expectations but leaves audiences exceptionally satisfied. I'd say there's opportunity for some repeat viewing just in the first weekend that will help make it big."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Think Like a Man," $18 million.

2. "The Pirates! Band of Misfits," $11.4 million ($5.5 million international).

3. "The Lucky One," $11.3 million ($4.8 million international).

4. "The Hunger Games," $11.25 million ($7.4 million international).

5. "The Five-Year Engagement," $11.2 million.

6. "Safe," $7.7 million ($2.4 million international).

7. "The Raven," $7.3 million.

8. "Chimpanzee," $5.5 million.

9. "The Three Stooges," $5.4 million.

10. "The Cabin in the Woods," $4.5 million ($1.5 million international).

Why iOS Apps Look Better Than Android Apps [Apps]

You might think app design is app design, whether the software is being developed for iOS or Android. But, in fact, creating highly polished, elegant-looking apps is simply easier to do when developing for iOS. That's the prevailing conventional wisdom among developers who code for both platforms.
